SOC 2 is an audit report. An independent auditor checks whether a company's controls protect other people's data, and writes down what they found. It is built around five trust service categories: security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality and privacy. Security is always included, and a company chooses which of the others apply to it.
There are two kinds of report. A Type 1 report looks at how the controls are designed at one moment in time. A Type 2 report looks at whether the controls actually worked over a period of time, which is why it takes longer and carries more weight.
