Muhammadu Buhari was born on 17 December 1942 in Daura, Katsina State. He led the coup of 31 December 1983 and ruled as military head of state until August 1985, a period marked by his War Against Indiscipline campaign. Three decades later he returned as a civilian, winning the 2015 election for the All Progressives Congress and serving as President from 29 May 2015 to 29 May 2023. He died in London on 13 July 2025.

Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida was born on 17 August 1941 in Minna, Niger State. He rose through the Nigerian Army to the rank of General and took power in August 1985, governing until August 1993. His years in office brought the Structural Adjustment Programme from 1986 and the move of the federal capital from Lagos to Abuja in December 1991. He annulled the presidential election of 12 June 1993, a decision he publicly regretted in February 2025.

Ernest Shonekan was born on 9 May 1936 in Lagos. A lawyer by training, he joined the United Africa Company of Nigeria in 1964 and became its chairman and managing director in 1980, leading what was then one of the largest African controlled companies in sub-Saharan Africa. He headed Nigeria's Interim National Government from 26 August to 17 November 1993. He died in Lagos on 11 January 2022 at the age of 85.

Abdulsalami Abubakar was born on 13 June 1942 in Minna, Niger State. A career soldier who rose to the rank of General, he became Nigeria's head of state on 9 June 1998 after the death of Sani Abacha. He promised a swift return to civilian rule, set up the Independent National Electoral Commission and oversaw a new constitution. He handed power to Olusegun Obasanjo on 29 May 1999 and later chaired Nigeria's National Peace Committee.

Umaru Musa Yar'Adua was born on 16 August 1951 in Katsina. A chemistry teacher turned politician, he served two terms as Governor of Katsina State from 1999 to 2007 before winning the presidency for the Peoples Democratic Party. His swearing in on 29 May 2007 was the first handover from one elected civilian president to another in Nigerian history. He proclaimed the Niger Delta amnesty in June 2009. He died in office in Abuja on 5 May 2010.
