Samora Moises Machel was born on 29 September 1933 in Chilembene, Gaza Province, in what was then Portuguese Mozambique. He trained as a nurse in Lourenco Marques, now Maputo, and the racial pay gap he saw there pushed him towards the liberation movement. He joined FRELIMO in 1963, became its president in 1970, and on 25 June 1975 became the first President of independent Mozambique. He died on 19 October 1986 when his plane crashed at Mbuzini in South Africa.
