Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was born on 26 September 1936 in Mbhongweni, Bizana, in what is now the Eastern Cape. She trained as a social worker and worked at Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto before becoming one of the most visible figures in the fight against apartheid. Married to Nelson Mandela from 1958 to 1996, she was banished to Brandfort from 1977 to 1985. She later led the ANC Women's League and served in parliament. She died in Johannesburg on 2 April 2018.
