Herbert Macaulay was born in Lagos on 14 November 1864. He trained in England as a land surveyor and civil engineer, then turned from colonial service to journalism and politics. In 1923 he founded the Nigerian National Democratic Party, the country's first political party, and in 1944 he became the first president of the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons, with Nnamdi Azikiwe as secretary. He died in Lagos on 7 May 1946 and is widely called the father of Nigerian nationalism.
