Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe was born on 5 December 1924 in Graaff-Reinet, South Africa. He broke away from the African National Congress and became the first president of the Pan Africanist Congress in 1959. On 21 March 1960 he led a non-violent protest against the pass laws and walked to Orlando police station to be arrested, the same day police killed 69 people at Sharpeville. Parliament wrote the Sobukwe Clause to hold him on Robben Island until 1969. He died in Kimberley on 27 February 1978.
