Kwame Nkrumah was born in Nkroful in the Gold Coast in 1909 and became the leading figure in Ghana's march to independence. He served as prime minister from 1952 and led Ghana out of British rule on 6 March 1957, the first colony in sub-Saharan Africa to get there.
