Abdulsalami Abubakar was born on 13 June 1942 in Minna, Niger State. A career soldier who rose to the rank of General, he became Nigeria's head of state on 9 June 1998 after the death of Sani Abacha. He promised a swift return to civilian rule, set up the Independent National Electoral Commission and oversaw a new constitution. He handed power to Olusegun Obasanjo on 29 May 1999 and later chaired Nigeria's National Peace Committee.
