Marcus Garvey was born on 17 August 1887 in Saint Ann's Bay, Jamaica, and died on 10 June 1940 in London. In 1914 he founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association, which grew into the largest mass movement of people of African descent in the twentieth century. He published the Negro World newspaper and launched the Black Star Line shipping venture. His Pan-Africanist message of racial pride and self-reliance shaped movements across Africa and the diaspora.
