Chief Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti was a Nigerian teacher, women's rights campaigner and nationalist. She founded and led the Abeokuta Women's Union, whose mass protests against the taxation of market women contributed to the Alake of Abeokuta abdicating temporarily in 1949. She later led the Nigerian Women's Union and received the Lenin Peace Prize in 1970. Injured when soldiers raided her son Fela's Kalakuta compound in February 1977, she died on 13 April 1978.
