Thomas Isidore Noel Sankara was a Burkinabe military officer and revolutionary who became President in August 1983. He renamed Upper Volta as Burkina Faso in 1984 and pursued campaigns on literacy, mass vaccination, land reform and women's rights, while rejecting dependency on foreign aid. He was assassinated on 15 October 1987 during a coup led by his former ally Blaise Compaore. In 2022 a Burkinabe court convicted Compaore in absentia over the killing.
