Two Nigerian epics are in cinemas this week, and between them they carry most of Nollywood’s history.

King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos is in cinemas now.

Adebayo Tijani directs. Femi Adebayo and Odunlade Adekola lead, with Jide Kosoko, Femi Branch, Gabriel Afolayan, Tina Mba and Faithia Williams. It is the story of the 19th-century monarch Oba Kosoko and the fight for the Lagos throne — power, legacy and resistance, on the scale Femi Adebayo has been building toward for years. It is not the only one worth your ticket this week.

Ikenga: The Last Festival has been running since 21 August, and its cast reads like a roll call of the people who built Nollywood: Pete Edochie, Nkem Owoh, Patience Ozokwor, Kanayo O. Kanayo and Zubby Michael, directed by Darlington Obodo Kelechi. Those five names in one film is not a common event.
