Kelechi Orji, known as Kelly Hansome, is a Nigerian recording artist, producer and technologist. He was born on 18 January 1984 in Eziobodo, Imo State, and is the founder of CelebIsland.

Imo State, and a computer science degree

Kelly Hansome was born Kelechi Orji in Eziobodo, Imo State, in January 1984.

He began studying Computer Science at Madonna University, and went on to take an associate degree in Information Systems and a bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity. That is an unusual background for a Nigerian recording artist, and it explains more about the second half of this story than the first.

2002, and “Maga Don Pay”

His music career began in 2002, while he was still a student.

The record that broke him was “Maga Don Pay”. It became one of the defining Nigerian singles of its moment — a phrase that escaped the song and entered ordinary speech, which is the rarest thing a record can do. More than fifteen years later people who could not name the artist can still finish the line.

The industry years

What followed is the part of the story that has been written about most, and usually least carefully.

Kelly Hansome has been in public disputes with record labels and with other artists. He has said, repeatedly and on the record, that he was not prepared to be managed into silence, and that the disagreements were about contracts, ownership and control rather than personality.

CelebIsland

In 2026 Kelly Hansome launched CelebIsland, a Nigerian-built social platform for music, film, broadcast and business. The pitch is straightforward: an artist should not need a gatekeeper’s permission to reach the people who already care about their work.

Members run live audio broadcasts from their phones, publish their own catalogue, price their own work through Creator Vault, and keep what it earns. The platform also runs a scheduled television channel.

Its early membership is weighted toward exactly the people this story is about. Seun Kuti. Ruggedman. Blackface Naija. Weird MC. Eedris Abdulkareem. Jaywon. Broadcaster Nedu Wazobia. Author and filmmaker Onyeka Nwelue. A roster of artists who built the Nigerian industry and have spent the past decade being covered mainly when there was a quarrel to report.

The Computer Science degree stops being a footnote at this point.

Where he is now

Still recording. Still performing. Running a platform with a published rulebook that names tribal and ethnic abuse as grounds for removal — a rule that, unusually, is written to apply to the founder himself and to be enforced by someone other than him.
